Training Date Schedule
Here is a brief overview of the components of the training continuum:
Fast Start Training
Fast Start training is the first step for any new volunteer and is to be delivered immediately after a new leader registers and before he or she meets with any youth member.Basic Leader Training
The new Basic Leader Training comprises two parts: New Leader Essentials for all unit-level leaders and Leader Specific training, which is based on the leader's unit-level position.Leader-Specific Training
These training courses include leader specific training for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, and Venturing leaders; an introduction to outdoor leader skills; and the new Wood Badge course. What Makes a Trained Leader?
• Cub Scout leaders are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials and the Cub Scout Leader Specific Training for their position.
• Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials, Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster Leader Specific Training, and Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills.
• Troop Committee members are considered trained when they have completed New Leader Essentials and the Troop Committee Challenge as their Leader Specific training.

A log-in is required, however anyone may create a user account and view the courses. Registered members of the BSA may provide their member numbers (as part of the user profile) to receive credit. Most courses take no more than an hour.
BUG ALERT: A number of users have reported that they are unable to create accounts for the e-learning system using Microsoft Internet Explorer version 7.0 (the very latest version) because an image is superimposed over text fields, preventing them from entering data. We are currently working on a newer version of the account creation/management interface that will not have this problem. In the meantime, these users may be able to complete the form if they use their "tab" key to navigate among text fields. Otherwise, they will need to use a different Web browser (Netscape, FireFox, or even an older version of IE) to create an account. The following training's are available online:
Aquatics Safety (Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat)
Safe Swim Defense and Safety Afloat. In the first unit, we'll cover the eight crucial defenses for safe waterfront activity in Scouting (supervision, fitness, safe area, lifeguards, lookouts, ability grouping, buddy system, and discipline). Before a BSA group may engage in swimming activities of any kind, a minimum of one adult leader must complete Safe Swim Defense training, have a commitment card with them, and agree to use the eight defenses in this plan.In the second section, we review the boating safety unit, Safety Afloat, and cover the nine defenses for safe boating activity. Please note that review of either or both of these units online is considered helpful but does not meet all the BSA qualifications for conducting water-related programs. For more, and before conducting any waterfront or boating activities, contact your local council.
Fast Start is a package of position-specific programs available to new leaders. Each program gives leaders information on planning and conducting their first meeting along with additional program activities. Cub Scout Leader Fast Start, Boy Scout Leader Fast Start, and Venturing Leader Fast Start guides are available through your unit leader or the District Training Chair or
may be accessed on-line.

University of Scouting
The central theme in our University of Scouting is “Growth through Sharing”. When you became a new leader or changed jobs on a committee you were given a BSA Fast Start tape to get you familiar with your new job area. Then you attended the New Leader Essentials to learn the values, aims, history, funding, and methods of Scouting. Next was the Leader Specific Training covered how to plan and run your meetings and show how the different positions interact in a unit so you can “FIND YOUR GROOVE” in your new position. Now you find that you still have Scouting Questions and wonder, “Where do seasoned Scouters find answers?” They will tell you to connect to other Scouters at Roundtables, Advanced Wood Badge training or the UNIVERSITY OF SCOUTING.
“FIND YOUR GROOVE” at the University of Scouting . Receive a new patch and a CD full of information and network and share with other Scouters over lunch. Mark your calendars. Invite your leaders, parents. Bring your older Scouts and Ventures!
Nearly 100 courses are available to select from. Don’t throw away a great opportunity to meet and share your experiences. Grab a friend and travel together, talk about what you hope to learn on the way down, introduce your friends to your “new Friends” at lunch, and then learn from each other on the way home.
National Youth Leadership Training
The purpose of National Youth Leadership Training is to train the young leaders in your troop to become effective and reliable "Leaders". * Currently hold a leadership position in the troop (Senior Patrol Leader, Assistant Senior Patrol Leader, or a Scout you feel is destined for one of these leadership positions). If a Scout is interested in NYLT, he should talk to his Scoutmaster. A NYLT application has been mailed to all eligible scouts and to all Scoutmasters. The Scoutmasters approval and signature are required on each Scout's application. Completed applications should be sent, along with the registration fee to the Black Swamp Area Council at 2100 Broad Avenue, Findlay, Ohio 45840.

Wood Badge for the 21st Century is available to all Scout leaders. It has been developed for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Scout, Venturing, and District leaders. Its focus is on leadership, not outdoor skills.
As a result of attending Wood Badge, participants will be able to:
• View Scouting globally, as a family of interrelated, values-based programs that provide age appropriate activities for youth.
• Recognize the contemporary leadership concepts utilized in corporate America and leading government organizations, which are relevant to our values-based movement.
• Apply the skills that they learn from their participation as a Wood badge member of a successful working team to their unit or district committees.
• Revitalize their commitment to Scouting by sharing in an overall inspirational experience that helps provide Scouting with the leadership it needs to accomplish its mission on an ongoing basis.Wood Badge
