Mud Hens Game
The Black Swamp Area Council partners with the Toledo Mud Hens for Scout Day at the new Fifth Third Field in May. Scout Day includes tickets to the game, pre-game parade, patch, and overnight stay (bring your tent and personal gear) o the outfield following the game. Cost is $10, a person.

Charette Challenge
Scouts, Explorers and Venturer ages 14 and up are invited to the Charette Challenges. Cost is $8 per person. However, if a member brings a nonmember guest the cost is only $5 per person. Come out to Camp Lakota in November which will feature 2 land tracks: Land navigation (orienteering, map and compass and GPS) or Shooting Sports (Rifle, Archery, Crossbow, and Shotgun) In December come to Camp Berry to participate in the Climbing and Rappelling, and Shooting Sports (Rifle, Archery, Crossbow, and Shotgun). Both tracks will offer different skill level areas for beginners and more advanced participants. Sign up today for one or both of these event! If you want more information call the scout office.

Klondike - Camp Lakota, Defiance,OH
The Klondike Derby is a dogsled race like back in the Alaskan Gold Rush, but this time, Boy Scout patrols, Venture crews, and Exploring posts provide all the Scout power to pull the sleds. Scoutmasters will need to obtain the Leader's Guide to explain all the rules, what to pack in your sleds, and how to be prepared for the cold temperature. It's a fun-filled event for the Boy Scout, Venturer, and Explorers where they attempt to solve real problems using Scouting skills. The fee is $10 per Scout or $8 if paid by the pre registration date. Fee includes a patch and awards. The first sleds leave the starting gate at 9 AM.

Where do you have a chance to hike, backcountry camp, spar pole climb, horseback ride, pan for gold, rock climb, burro race, and stand on an airplane wing at 10,000 feet above sea level before noon each day? Where else but at Philmont Scout Ranch, Scouting’s premier High Adventure Base. At Philmont, located in the wilderness of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains of northeastern New Mexico, you and your crew will enjoy 10 days of hiking and challenging activities. From the Tooth of Time to the heights of Baldy Mountain, you will experience the thrill of being out in “God’s Country.”

Black Swamp Area Council will be sending a contingent of Boy Scouts and/or male-female Venturers, and adult leaders, to Philmont in 2009. Participants must be at least 14 years old by January 1, 2009.

A $100 deposit is required with all youth registrations and adult leader applications.
Youth registrations and adult leader applications without a name will not be accepted. The trek cost is $1000.* Adult leaders must submit an adult leader high adventure application, and be selected by the high adventure committee to serve as a trek leader. Adults not selected for leadership positions will have their $100 deposit refunded.

Registration deadline is April 30, 2008. After this date, Out-of-Council participants will be accepted. Black Swamp Area Council must submit its initial payment to Philmont on May 1, 2008, to secure its slots for the 2009 trek.

Venuring
Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.


Exploring/Learning for Life
Exploring is Learning for Life's career education program for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) or 15 through 20 years old. Adults are selected by the participating organization for involvement in the program. Color, race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, ethnic background, economic status, and citizenship are not criteria for participation. Explorer posts can specialize in a variety of career skills. Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis: career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character education, and leadership experience.


Sea Scouts

Sea Scouting was founded in the United States in 1912. In the 90 + years since Sea Scouts have charted a course of leadership and adventure. Sea Scouting is a coed outdoor program for young adults 14 - 20 years old and their adult advisors.

Good Turn for America

More than 8,000 members of the Black Swamp Area Council, Boy Scouts of America distribute food collection bags in April for their part in Scouting's Good Turn for America. This is Northwest Ohio's largest volunteer collection for food. The nonperishable canned goods get used to help feed the hungry in the Scout Council's 13 county territory. Scouts and Scouters leave yellow food collection bags the first Saturday and return to pick up the filled bags, which should be placed outside the front doors by 9 AM the next Saturday.
